Pretty much, the battery option died after the first 45-60 days despite meticulously following the charging instructions. More specifically, it fails to hold a charge much longer than a few days while kept in a trunk starting around that time frame. As a tire inflator, it works fine as long as it's charged. Today, after about 2 years of ownership, the inflator finally died too just a few moments ago. Perhaps that's considered a good run and perhaps not. I'd intended it for the convenience of not having to go to a gas station for the usual guy-routine tire checks.



Black & Decker is not the product it was 20+ years ago.

This is a great charger. Our family van doesn't get driven much during certain times of the year so it sits in the garage. It's on its second battery and I am determined to keep this one fresh and topped off. The included dongle for for permanent installation makes this a snap, all I have to do is pop the hood and connect it up to the connector and I'm done. The charger automatically goes into maintenance mode where it keeps the battery nice and happy. I've also used this charger to revive an otherwise completely drained battery for a neighbor's car. He left an interior light on and discovered that the battery was completely flat two weeks later. I let him borrow this charger and it fully charged the battery over a weekend and the battery has not given my neighbor any more issues.



It costs more than some of the dumb battery chargers, but this one takes up less space, comes with valuable accessories, and provides enough current to properly charge larger capacity batteries. Two thumbs up!

I bought the Battery Tender 2-Bank Battery Management System charger to replace a very old one that is close to end of life and mostly, for the capability of:

1. charging two batteries concurrently

2. overcharging protection



I was pleased with the weight of the Battery Tender, the compact size and the simple user's interface that shows the status of the charge. It does the job effectively and the price is right. I haven't had it long enough to make statement about its reliability except that it appears to be well made. It is a plus that this charger can be used on a long list of different types of battery. Please check the manufacturer's list to make sure that it fits the intended use.

CTEK has hands down engineered the finest battery maintenance system. I've used their smaller charger, but the 7002 is the top of the line with extra features.



My first reason for switching to ctek was that I installed a GPS radar detector which I wanted to leave running 24/7 so that the microwave components stay warm at night and so that the GPS gets the updates during the night about the satellite constellation. This whay when I leave the spectrum analyzer and frequency counter are warmed up and ready to make accurate measurements.



Doing this required a source of power to run everything all night and CTEK delivered in the 7002 - it has an extra button besides recharging customized for my optima yellow top battery called "supply" which supplies 6A of power at 13.6 VDC for times when you are working late and have the doors open and dome light on. This prevents DISCHARGE of your battery while working. I also installed the CTEK dash mounted input for the charger to make it easy to plug it in CTEK 56-380 Comfort Indicator Panel CTEK was so thoughtful in their work they even provided a red-yellow-green binking LED on the panel to indicate your battery's health.



The 7002 also has a recondition mode that takes full advantage of ctek's pulse charging system to desulphate lead-calcium batteries, especially those like the Optima batteries.



This is top of the line stuff - I highly recommend it for build quality (you can hear the relays inside clicking through the charge steps) and for features (the pulse battery conditioning system which goes far and beyond other brands chargers)



It's also the recommended storage charger for porsche automobiles, not that that matters.

Bought this unit to quickly set up and run an A/C powered camera and ethernet hub in the field for about 5hrs. Works great. The battery inside is an SEL CB17-12 if you care to Google for the specs (12v 17 amphrs). I tested my load on a car bat w/another inverter and it all drew ~250ma @12vcdc. On the Electromate I get 5hrs which is shorter than anticipated, for one thing it shuts down the inverter when the internal DC drops below 10.9v. Also, there inverter has a fan that is always on that draws ~250ma @12vdc. B&D tech support says I can use the jumper-cables to a car battery and continue to use the AC inverter to extend the time. They warn to not to run the inverter while charging it thru the 12vdc as it will burn up the charge circuit, just use the jumper-cables and turn the main power switch on - I'll have to try that. Note that the advice elsewhere about keeping it charged and stored cool.. The spec sheet for the battery tells the story- expect a short life (1.5-3yrs?) if you keep it hot and dont keep it charged. Looks like a replacement bat is ~$60US.

Well, I would have given this four stars as the meter is rather hard to decipher. But decided to give it five as Schumacher has an easy to get to website where the PDF manual can be found in about 5 seconds. Actually it is explained well in the manual, but when it's been a year since using it you have to go online and look at the PDF again :)



I bought this when Montgomery Wards was going out of business from one of their auto-center stores. So that means it's been around for 10 years or so. Still works great.



I don't agree with the people here giving it a bad review because it is a manual charger. It clearly says it is a manual charger. It's not Schumacher's fault you don't know "manual == you are responsible to disconnect it when battery is charged"



While the lower power chargers (trickle, 1.5A, etc) can be had for about the same price in automatic, none of the chargers sporting 6amp charge (like this one) or 6+ amp charge are this cheap. The automatics with this much "oomph" or more all cost more.

This is a great product that I don't know how I got along without. We have a couple of riding lawn mowers, ATV, and off road vehicles. Every spring we had to deal with replacing batteries, and during the summer after a few weeks of idle time we would have weak or depleted batteries. We have setup all of the equipment with quick connects. Everything stays charged and ready for use. In the dead of winter when we needed to pull equipment out it started without incident. This would be a five star review if the thing kept working. I loved it and found all the features useful and effective.



Alas, it was not to be. The first one failed, and the dealer would not help me, so I sent it back to BD. They sent me a refurb which was intermittent, so back it went. 2 months later, I got another refurb from them. So far, so good. Maybe the third time will be the charm.
